In persons with severe Arthritis, joints may sometimes be destroyed irreparably. This often results in pain and loss of mobility. In selected cases, the damaged joint can be replaced by an artificial one by major Orthopaedic surgery. This procedure can relieve pain, restore mobility and make a tremendous impact on the quality of life of the person.
The aim of drug treatment in Arthritis is to control or cure Arthritis and prevent joint destruction. However, occasionally either the Arthritis is severe or the patient has been unable to avail herself of effective treatment and joint replacement becomes necessary to restore her to normal function.
The cost of the implant for the surgery is generally above RM 5,000. This is borne by the patient both in the public and the private sector. Many patients forego surgery and continue to deteriorate and suffer pain because they are unable to afford the implant.
Arthritis Foundation Malaysia appreciates this area of need and has set up a fund to assist those who require a joint replacement but lack the means to purchase the prosthesis.
Here are the answers to the most frequently asked questions about the fund:

- The subsidy will cover up to 90% of the cost of the implant. The surgery will have to be performed at a government funded hospital.
